St. John's Nursery School Director

Position: Director for St. John’s Nursery School, Huntington L.I., Sept 2022.  Preferred start date in July 2022 to run summer camp.  Successful candidate is responsible for overall operation of the school, staff management and care and instruction of the children and must demonstrate ability to:

  • Facilitate a safe, comfortable and welcoming educational environment for both children and parents;
  • Be accessible to parents and responsive to their questions and feedback;
  • Manage staff and enable their professional training and development;
  • Work proficiently with computers and technology, including social media, as an aid to education and communication.
  • Use proven organizational skills, attention to detail and know-how to combine leadership with a collaborative working relationship with staff.

Job Description:

The Director is responsible for overall operation of the school, staff management and care and instruction of the children, including but not limited to: 

  • Manage and oversee registration for the school year to achieve full enrollment; provide tours of the school and welcome parents of potential students upon request;
  • Make decisions about class placement, numbers and enrollment;
  • Update, collate and send all school forms in August for the beginning of the school year;
  • Plan and organize “Meet the Teacher” day and “Parent Information Meeting” at the start of the school year;
  • Communicate weekly with parents, including a review of happenings in the school and information about upcoming events ;
  • Utilize social media to advertise the school and to provide parents with weekly communications and other information about school events and projects;
  • Work with the treasurer on the budget, tuition records and school finances
  • Assist with general facility management and maintenance of the portion of the premises used by the nursery school

Specific responsibilities pertain to the classroom and the children’s educational preparation:

  • Be a presence in the classrooms and establish relationships with  staff and children;
  • Facilitate assessments and referrals to the District Special Ed Departments for children who may need such services;
  • Arrange special events like the Thanksgiving Feast, Christmas Pageant, etc.;
  • Schedule/arrange field trips;
  • Plan and supervise the St. John’s Nursery School Summer Camp and Winter Camp

Responsibilities for management and professional training and development of the staff include:

  • Interview and hire new staff, as needed
  • Supervise staff; provide support and guidance, including monthly staff meetings and helping staff work through issues ( e.g., those arising from team teaching);
  • Communicate weekly with staff about upcoming events, issues and needs;
  • Provide curriculum support/professional development opportunities;
  • Schedule and oversee courses for the staff to be trained in CPR, SAFE church training, etc.;
  • Help arrange for subs when needed and be prepared to step in if one cannot be found;

Responsibilities specific to this Nursery School as a church-run nursery school include:

  • Meet monthly with the Steering Committee to provide updates about the school and discuss and seek the Committee’s guidance on issues and policy matters;
  • Arrange chapel times with the Rector or clergy member assigned to the Nursery School;
  • Provide reports to the Vestry, the church’s lay governing body, for its monthly meetings;
  • Prepare an Annual Report for the annual meeting of the church and attend the meeting to give an oral report and answer any questions;
  • Participate in various St. John's church events and initiatives

Certification

  • New York State Certification for Early Childhood Education required

Education, Experience, Competencies  and Skills

Education and Experience: 

  • Master’s degree preferred but will consider post-college early childhood education credits or a demonstrated familiarity with principles, goals, and objectives of early childhood education.
  • Minimum of five years teaching experience in early childhood education OR in school administration.

Competencies and Skills:

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills in dealing with parents, students and staff;
  • Proficiency with computers and technology, including social media, as an aid to education and communication.
  • Highly accessible and responsive to parents, offering a welcoming, open and understanding environment for their questions and feedback;
  • A natural comfort level in being with and around Nursery School children and staff in a church school environment;.
  • Organizational skills, detail orientation and the ability to combine leadership with a collaborative working relationship with staff.
