Growing in faith

Faith Formation

Sunday School for Kids

Sunday School meets at 9:30 am in the Canterbury Room! Our teachers' commitment to bringing children closer to the knowledge and love of Christ is the cornerstone of St. John's Sunday School Program.

After processing in with the priest, the children will rejoin the service at the Peace. You and your family are invited to Sunday School each week—come by and meet the teachers any Sunday!

Lectionary Reflections

Lectionary Reflections is a scriptural study group that meets each week to consider, discuss, and pray about the lections (readings) for the upcoming Sunday’s service. Come join in the Guild Room at 11am on Wednesdays to take a deeper dive into the Bible passages that will be read in church on Sunday!

EfM (Education for Ministry)

EfM usually meets on Monday evenings beginning in September and ending in June. Please contact Leslie Valentine at leslieval@aol.com if you would like to learn more about EfM.

Youth Group

The mission of the Youth Group, a growing ministry for students grades 6–12 coordinated in tandem with other area churches, is to build relationships with each other, with their leaders, with their community and with God. We seek to guide the young members as they begin to participate in the life of the church. For more information, please contact the Parish Office.

Music and worship

Making Joyful Noise

Music is an important part of the worship service and the communal life at SJH.

The music program is led by Alex Pryrodny, our music director. The enthusiastic singing by the congregation, the choral anthem, and the occasional folk band music add something very special to the worship experience and to the spiritual nourishment of the congregation. If you are interested in joining our music group or have a child wishing to participate, please contact the Parish Office.

St. John’s is blessed to have a very fine volunteer adult choir with some excellent soloists. They sing at the 10am service on Program Year Sundays, feast days, and other special occasions. They practice on Thursday evenings and before the service and additionally, as needed, for Christmas, Easter, and other special services. The choir is supplemented by several professional singers and instrumentalists on special occasions.

Food and fellowship

Feeding Our Community

SJH Kitchen Program

The Kitchen Program (also known fondly as “The Breakfast Team”) is the food and fellowship component of Sunday mornings at SJH. Teams of parishioners serve breakfast on a rotating basis in the Great Hall. With each team offering a different menu, some lite bites are always available after our Sunday services. In addition to offering the time to share a meal, it provides a relaxed opportunity to socialize and allows regulars and visitors to get to know each other.

Food Insecurity & HIHI

This is a town-wide program in which some 40 houses of worship get together to feed and house our unhoused neighbors during cold weather, generally October through March. To date, SJH has contributed, prepared, and served thousands of meals in partnership with a nearby church that provides the shelter!

Creativity and care

Crafting Together

St. Hilda’s Guild

This Guild has been in existence for close to half a century. It is a group of dedicated members who meet faithfully every Tuesday in the Guild Room to create wonderful handmade decorations and gift items primarily for sale at the SJH Harvest Fair. In and outside their meetings, friendships are strengthened, and the members support each other as they share their cares and concerns in Christian love.

Always on the lookout for more hands to help with their projects, they welcome newcomers from the parish and friends of parishioners to join them in their joyful labor of creating beautiful craft items. Their motto is: come, bring a friend, and make a friend!

Prayer Shawl Ministry

The Prayer Shawl Ministry, led by Lynn Hansen, is a group that creates shawls and blankets for members of our community and congregation. Prayer shawls have come to symbolize peace, comfort, shelter, and spiritual sustenance. Our ministers donate their time, talent, and yarn to creating shawls and blankets for those who are suffering and in need. The shawls provide warmth and embrace the recipient through the prayers of our St. John’s congregation and the loving presence of God.

The Prayer Shawl Ministers knit or crochet shawls at home and then gather monthly to work on their shawls, pray for the recipients, and enjoy each other’s company. The shawls are blessed before they are sent to those in need, and they meet on the first Thursday of each month in the Guild Room.

You are welcome to be part of the Prayer Shawl Ministry! You can join our group to meet monthly, or you may also create a shawl on your own and donate it to the ministry. You can also donate yarn to help our members create shawls for others. If you are new to crochet, please come and learn the craft! Our hope is to widen our circle and continue to embrace those in need of prayer.

If you or someone you know is in need of prayer and would like to pass on a prayer shawl, please reach out to the Parish Office.
